This quote above is Hillary Clinton's opinion on the rights of women and how they should have the power to choose.
There are many opinions on Female Genital Mutilation. An organization GAMCOTRAP in Gambia believe that female circumcision is harming women and girls all across the nation. GAMCOTRAP believe it takes away their say in their body. Another organization,in Ethiopia is ,called CARE. CARE is also against FGM like GAMCOTRAP but instead of trying to safeguard the women because their rights are being taken away they take more of a health perspective. CARE looks into more of the health aspect than the social problems that happens with people who undergo FGM. They believe the long-term effects on the body hurts the way the female body is supposed to function. Lastly, but certainly not least there is an organization named Population Council that is located in many of the places where is FGM is living large. The Population Council believes that FGM reflects deep-rooted gender-based inequalities, constitutes extreme discrimination against girls and women, and violates numerous human rights. they are strongly against the practice of FGM.
These different perspectives exist for many reasons. Some people believe that FGM is acceptable and should not be illegal and women should have to go through “circumcision,” while others believe this is a form of torture. While people like Dr. Isatou Touray believes that “A law against FGM is a human rights issue and is necessary and relevant for the protection of women and children.” She is even risking her life to get her point of view across Gambia. One person who is strongly against FGM who actually was a “traditional circumciser” , is Basu Mohammed. She believes that it is against his religion (Islam), and also that it is bad for women’s health. A person who represents Population Council is Habil Oloo partnered with others in Population Council to write an analytical essay on different ways to “cross over to women hood” other than FGM. Population Council and Habil Oloo get the point across that FGM is bad by not exactly directly approaching the situation but giving creative alternatives and educating the people of other options. These representative are influential in the fight against female Genital Mutilation.
The quote above is from the perspective of Rukia Nakadama, Uganda's minister of Gender and Cultural affairs on Female Genital Mutilation.
There are many organizations fighting against female genital mutilation. Organizations like UNFPA, is taking a holistic approach, such legal and policy reform, national capacity building and working at the community level, towards FGM abandonment. Another is FORWARD which has been a pioneer in promoting innovative strategies and community orientated approaches leading to the prevention and abandonment of FGM. There are many more organizations working against FGM that take different approaches such as helping women escape FGM, educating women, and trying to make FGM illegal in developing countries. No matter what there are so many people fighting, they all believe FGM is completely and utterly wrong.
This quote is from Margaret Kapkoikoi a former cutter who realized genital mutilation was wrong.
